1. Where is the camp held this year?
This year’s summer camp is located halfway between the Downtown and the North York Alliance Française campuses, allowing students from both centers to partake in the activities without worrying about a lengthy commute.
The Toronto French school is easily accessible by public transport (Lawrence Subway station + a 10-minute eastbound bus ride either by taking Bus #162 or Bus #124.)
The exact address is: 296 Lawrence Ave. East, Toronto ON, M4N 1T7.
- Daycare: available on location from 8:00am to 9:00am and from 4:00pm to 6:00 pm.
- Indoor activities: inside the Toronto French School, where the children will have access to:
- Outdoor activities: the school offers an engaging playground and enjoys close proximity to a park, not to mention the gorgeous nearby ravine.
- Parking: children should be dropped off at 101 Mildenhall Rd. (north of Lawrence Ave.), and NOT in front of the 296 building on Lawrence Ave.
2. What types of activities are offered and for what age?
Following are some of the types of activities in our summer camp: arts and crafts, songs, story-telling, sports etc.
One field trip and one special guest (artist, performer, singer, clown, etc.) are generally included in each session.
3. Is this an English or a French-speaking camp?
All the activities and tasks are performed in French with themes that appeal to the participants’ age groups. The camp is geared towards a non-francophone audience, welcoming children between the ages of 5 and 11 coming from the Core French, Extended French, or Immersion programs.
4. What happens if my child does not speak any French?
He/she will be placed in the beginner group.
5. My child will be joining the immersion program in September. Do you believe that the AFT camp will aid him/her?
The camp will help your child acquire certain language reflexes including expanding their oral and written comprehension, which will definitely facilitate his/her integration in a French program in September.
6. My child is younger than 5 years old/older than 11 years old: can I still register him/her for the AFT summer camp?
Preferably not. We will however make an exception for the motivated 12-year-old who wants to join us, or the nearly 5-year-old who will be starting in an immersion program in September.
7. Can I register my child for only half a day?
No. From an educational point of view, children enjoy the camp more when they are enrolled for 2 consecutive weeks. Why?
- the child will begin to feel more comfortable at the end of the 1st week
- the child will have a greater opportunity to use the vocabulary learned during the first week of camp
Alternatively, we offer group classes only two hours in duration, running from 10:00am to 12:00pm or 2:00pm to 4:00pm for an entire month. These classes are held at either of our locations and welcome children and teens alike:
- from July 6th to July 30th
- from August 4th to August 31st
Your child will have to undergo an oral assessment prior to registering for such a course. Please call the AFT campus closest to your home to book a free placement test.
8. Can I register my child for one week only?
No.
9. Are children grouped by age and level?
Yes, children are grouped based on age and level of fluency during the first day of camp.
10. Should I drive the child myself?
Yes. We do not organize a bus pick-up service.
11. What happens if I run late and cannot pick up my child on time?
The TFS closes its doors at 6:00pm (school regulation). Therefore, late pick ups are unacceptable.
12. Does the camp offer snacks?
No, you have to prepare the snack yourself and also pack a bottle of water along. No nut products please.
13. What if I forget to give my child a snack?
The staff will look for the best options available.
14. What kind of equipment should the child bring with him/her?
Sport shoes are required not only for field trips, but also for playground and ravine-related activities, guaranteeing the child is in daily contact with nature and fresh air. Some sun lotion, mosquito repellent, a hat and a rain jacket (depending on the weather) are also necessary.
Alliance Française will not be responsible for the loss of personal belongings and strongly advises not to bring any electronic equipment such as video games, iPods or cell phones.
15. What is the staff to camper ratio?
One instructor and one assistant per group of 15 children maximum. Volunteers will assist with field trips. A camp manager will be present at the camp site all day to attend to all of your questions and concerns.
16. How qualified is the teaching staff?
Our instructors are all certified and experienced teachers of French-as-a-second-language for children.
17. My child suffers from allergies. How do I ensure he/she gets medical attention if needed?
Any known allergies must be notified upon registration. Any allergic child should carry an Epipen with him/her. Most of our staff onsite have First Aid training and will tend to your child should such a situation arise.
